Our dining room

We provide permanent residential care for elderly people who need help to live independently.  Most of our residents enjoy the social life and activities here, maintain good contact with their families, and are happy here.

We also provide short-term respite care for example where a family member who provides care needs a break or a holiday, and also for convalescence or recuperation after a stay in hospital.

Visitors to the home and to residents are welcome at all reasonable times, provided that the resident wishes to see them.

An important feature of our home is the activities which we organise for residents.  Most residents enjoy these activities and look forward to them.  They take place both inside and outside the home.  Activities in the home include bingo, carpet bowls, drawing and model making, and many others.  Outside activities include short escorted walks to the local shop, the pub or the river bank.

Entertainment is regularly staged in the home by outside visiting entertainers and these are very popular.

Residents are also encouraged to pursue their own interests as far as possible.  We provide television in the lounges and the public library provides and changes books at Marifa Lodge.

Residents are encouraged to maintain links with friends, relatives and the community by going out on visits and trips.  We encourage friends and relatives to take residents out with them or to their homes.

Our fees depend on the level of care needed and on the type of room.  An indication of fee levels is given in the table below.

Some of our residents are part funded by Social Services.  For these in most cases Social Services collect the resident’s contribution and pay the total amount to us.

Residents who pay their own fees pay direct to us privately.

Who are our residents?

We provide short-term or long-term personal, social and health care for service users who are unable adequately to care for themselves.

The following are the main criteria, but an assessment is made of any potential resident before admission:

Service user is over 65 years old.

Service user and professional advisors such as GP and social care staff agree that the service user is not able to live independently and residential care would be suitable.  This may be for a specified time period during convalescence or until other care arrangements are made or restored, or may be permanent.

Service user is not likely to disrupt the home or disturb other residents.

Consultation with service users

Residents can and do put forward their views at any time.  Residents are consulted informally often about the menu, the personal care they receive and activities they may wish to follow.  There is annual formal consultation using a Residents’ and Relatives’ satisfaction survey questionnaire.

All residents and their families and friends who visit are encouraged to make comments, suggestions or complaints using the forms provided.  These are checked and considered and responded to  as part of our quality assurance procedure.

Fire precautions

The home is fully equipped with all the fire safety equipment required by the Fire Service and it is fully maintained.  Staff are trained in the correct responses to a fire emergency.

If there is a fire and it may be necessary to get out of the building all residents should assemble in the larger lounge, or the entrance space by the side entrance in the extension, whichever is furthest from the fire.  If it is not safe to stay there and the building needs to be evacuated, all residents should assemble near the walnut tree in the garden at the back of the building.  Staff will assist with this.

Religious services

All residents are encouraged to attend religious services if they wish to.  The local places of worship or friends or relatives may collect residents for services, and the home will ensure that residents are ready to leave when they are collected.

Local ministers of religion and outreach singers visit the home regularly so that residents who wish may participate in religious services or hymn singing in the home.
